Included in the election reform bill was legislation by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, that calls for a study about allowing voting via the Internet in the future.
"Voting via the Internet has been suggested as one possible solution to election fraud and security problems," Hatch told the Senate, adding that it could help reverse low-turnout trends.
"The Internet has revolutionized the way people communicate and conduct business," he said. "The Internet has already increased voter awareness on issues. . . . In the future, the Internet may very well increase voter registration and participation, and thereby strengthen the country's electoral process."
